Maria Isabel Vasquez is a modern Self Portraiture artist. She was born in Peru in 1973 & moved to the United Kingdom in 2005. She is a mother of two young children, Maximillian and Valentina, who She adores.

She took Photography in 2004 at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale-Florida where She used to live. “I enjoyed learning Film Photography & developing my own images. I found Spending hours in The Dark Room quite fascinating and exciting”.

I was doing Portraiture of my own children who were all the Beauty I found easy to capture; however after few projects on Self Portraiture and finding inspiration from few female artists such as Cindy Sherman and Frida Kahlo among others, I found myself more connected with myself and producing what I wanted to produce.

“Self Portraiture is my connection to Freedom. My camera, my tripod, any source of light and myself, We are practically One” quotes Maria. “Some of my images are from real life experiences as a result of strong feelings and emotions such as passion, lust, self confidence, joy and also as a result of an adventurous soul, excitement & a daring hunger to express beyond what’s considered normal or acceptable”.

As a human being, I’ve always been a rebel, since childhood. I chose Not to follow Rules” which constrain the brain, the mind and the inspiration consequently in real life and I apply/ transmit this in most of my work. Photography is my tool to break rules. It’s my escape. If I ever felt low at times, just as most people, I would make time to do home Photoshoots or at chosen venue in order to feed and expand my mind and spirit & I would create staged images that would transmit emotions of all kinds.

Her work is based on portraying the beauty of the female body in general; the fascinating forms, corners, shadows, mystery and the different layers the anatomy of the human body can bear. All this is achieved by playing with lights & improvising in a very relaxed and enjoyable set accompanied by music, candles and a cup of berries tea or glass of wine.

“I disconnect from Reality by connecting more with myself. In spite of this sounding selfish, egocentric or even narcissistic; this actually helps me understand, appreciate & know myself better, which leads to Me understanding and accepting the rest of the world better.”

Your work is beautiful. I, too, take self-portraits from time to time, for reasons similar to those you express in your narrative. And I, like you, have two children and am about the same age as you are (just a few years older). Thank you for sharing your wonderful work.
